History:

Most weavers made rugs in addition to coverlets. Rugs could be made quickly and simply on a loom or by hand braiding. Rugs also were a way to repurpose old clothes and scraps that couldn’t be turned into anything else. Marinda Brown remembers “the first woven rugs I made I saved cotton material, boys’ shirts, old dresses, and the neighbors gave me this and that, and I’d put it all together and work out my colors.” This particular rug, though, is made from a combination of acrylic and wool threads of different colors, twisted together to create a bright pattern.

Description:

A woven rug in twill variation. The warp is white cotton thread, weft is a combination of twisted threads that include both acrylic and wool yarns. Visibile colors include red, blue, teal, green, and yellow. The edges of rug are finished with a 1/4″ wide plain weave segment of only cotton thread, and knotted fringe. The fringe is approximately 5″ long on each end.
