SUMMARY:Poplar Basket Making Class
DESCRIPTION:Learn to take the bark of the native tulip poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) and turn it into a handy basket to hold berries\, mushrooms\, flowers\, snacks\, or just to hang on the wall!  We will use hickory bark to stitch everything together and to use as a handle for carrying. This is a widespread tradition in the southern Appalachian Mountains\, and is even featured in Foxfire 4. In addition\, we will explore other traditional uses of tree bark in the southern Appalachians\, like willow bark whistles and cordage making. DESCRIPTION:Come join Miss Jenny and Briar Stevens as you spend an honest day making old-fashioned Lye soap. Old-fashion in a sense that you can pronounce the ingredients and understand the process. We will make the one and only “Lye soap”\, a product that has stood the test of time. Lye soap does not need scent or colors to make it what it is. This all-day class will cover basic “hot process” soap making skills. We will render fresh hog lard down into cracklings and grease. The cracklings will be used for snacking and the grease for our soap. We will cook a large cauldron full of lye soap. Upon finishing\, the soap will be poured into special molds for each person to take home. DESCRIPTION:The construction of cordage and glue by first communities likely represented a significant leap forward for humanity\, not unlike learning to make the first tools. Andrew Lee brings significant teaching and practical experience to learning these skills. DESCRIPTION:The Atlatl and Darts workshop is broken into a morning and afternoon session\, six hours of instruction total. First\, students will be given a short piece of river cane and shown how to create a hook or loop in one end that can be used to launch their darts. Next\, students will create darts from two pieces of river cane approximately 60” long. On one end of the cane\, they will be shown how to create a nock in the tip\, and then add fletching in order to stabilize the dart while in flight. Last\, students will take their atlatls and darts to an outdoor space where they can experience throwing darts for accuracy\, distance and fun. Each student will take home their completed atlatl and two darts. This class is suitable for ages ten and up; students under eighteen must have an accompanying adult present at all times. DESCRIPTION:BASIC SEWING class #1 Quilting and piecework sewing has been a skill used by many people in Appalachia as well as around the country for centuries.\n“Patchwork and Pieces” \nCome sit and sew with us as we use simple handsewing techniques to make small traditional quilt blocks and create mug mats or bookmarks from cotton fabric scraps. Learn how to join those smaller pieces together to create larger projects if you’d prefer. Maybe you’ll make a table runner for your family table\, or begin to create a lap sized quilt to use for these cooler evenings.  \nBring your own cotton fabrics to make a “memory piece” of your own\, or select from an available scrap box provided. \nYou only need a few supplies: scissors\, needle and thread\, and cotton fabric. SUMMARY:Shape Note Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Shape-note singing has a long history in the state of Georgia. The most widely used shape-note book\, The Sacred Harp\, was first published near Carrollton in 1844 and has remained in print ever since. Today people sing out of The Sacred Harp all over the world\, travelling to Georgia to participate in the annual singings and conventions that have taken place here since the 19th century. While shape-note singing developed in religious communities and employs Christian texts\, people of all backgrounds enjoy participating due to the robust musical style and close-knit community of singers. In this workshop you will learn the basics of shape-note singing and become familiar with The Sacred Harp. Straps and tassels are included. You will learn the basic stitching and cutting techniques\, setting rivets\, punching holes\, designing a bag (or starting out with a pre-cut and pre-punched set)\, adding artwork and colorizing\, and more.
