SUMMARY:Edible Plants and Mushroom Walk
DESCRIPTION:Come join Georgia Master Naturalist and Certified Edible Mushroom guide Michelle Withrow for an engaging walk-and-talk exploring native edible and medicinal plants and mushrooms. Michelle hosts the annual Georgia Wild Foods educational weekend each fall in North Georgia and has led popular walks at Foxfire for the past two years. \n\n\n\nThis nature walk is an easy\, approximately one-mile stroll through the Foxfire property. It is suitable for ages 7 and up\, but not recommended for those with limited mobility\, as the terrain includes occasional uneven ground and gentle inclines. Hiking shoes or tennis shoes are recommended\, along with sunscreen\, bug spray\, and a light rain jacket. \n\n\n\nThe experience also includes a brief classroom session with handouts and the chance to explore touch-friendly samples of dried mushrooms. Walk and classroom time together total about two hours. \n\n\n\nThe class concludes with a delicious snack of acorn pancakes with prickly pear syrup and a wild juice tasting. Participants are encouraged to bring lunch and spend the rest of the day exploring Foxfire’s unique buildings and grounds. \n\n\n\nFoxfire admission is included in the class fee.$50 per person | Limit 12 participants

DESCRIPTION:Would you like to learn the skills to carve artistic pieces out of almost any wood you have on hand? Join heritage skill expert Brian Ledford for a day of woodcarving at the Foxfire Museum! Participants will be given their own carving knife and cut-proof glove which they can use to continue practicing at home\, and will be instructed by Brian in the methods and techniques to create their own wooden folk art. For this class\, you must be 18 years of age or older to participate. For kids ages 10-17\, we will also offer a Kids + 1 Woodcarving class for parents and their children to learn this fun and practical skill together in the same class. The $100 fee for the class includes the cost of materials as well as admission to tour the Foxfire Museum on the day of your class.

Basic techniques of decoration with examples will be available as we turn your work into a one-of-a-kind creation. The finished jugs will be waterproof and ready to display or fill with the substance of your choice! If you are unable to pick up your item from Foxfire after the final firing (where the clay is heated in a kiln to transform it into a durable ceramic material)\, your item can be shipped for an additional fee based on current postage prices. DESCRIPTION:In this exciting class led by Georgann Lanich\, you will explore 3 different pottery methods that were used by many cultures before the invention of the pottery wheel. Each of these methods stand alone\, but can be combined for different creative results. You will have the chance to create more than one type of piece. These will be available to pick up after firing (heating the clay in a kiln to transform it into a durable ceramic material) and will include an optional day to glaze your work (or you can arrange to have the glazing done for you). Shipping arrangements can be made for an added fee based on current postage prices if pick-up is not possible. This is a great way to enjoy clay for all levels of interest. Admission to the class also includes admission for one to tour the Foxfire Museum on both the Pottery Building and Glazing Days. DESCRIPTION:During this two-day introduction to weaving\, taught by resident weaver Sharon Grist\, students will learn the mechanics of floor looms\, the process of making a warp\, how to properly thread heddles and reeds\, dressing the loom\, winding a proper bobbin\, hem-stitching the fabric\, and more! Students will weave a twill sampler runner on which they will explore numerous treadling variations on one basic threading sequence. No experience is necessary. \n\n\n\nClass fee includes two days of instruction (9:30 am – 4:00 pm each day)\, use of studio equipment\, all weaving materials\, and instructional hand-outs. DESCRIPTION:Foxfire Heritage Days returns for its 18th year on Friday\, June 5 and Saturday\, June 6. \n\n\n\nFor two days\, the Foxfire village fills with the work these historic buildings were made for. The forge will be going\, butter will be worked in the churn\, clay will be on the wheel\, and traditional Appalachian skills will be demonstrated throughout the museum grounds. \n\n\n\nCome celebrate Appalachian folklife with us through live demonstrations\, hands-on activities\, music\, food\, and time spent across the village. This is one of Foxfire’s favorite weekends of the year\, bringing together demonstrators\, families\, visitors\, and community members for two full days of heritage skills\, storytelling\, and mountain tradition. \n\n\n\nWhat makes Heritage Days special is where it happens. These skills are not tucked into booths or lined up on a street. They happen inside and around Foxfire’s historic cabins\, with demonstrators who know the work and are glad to talk while they do it. Visitors can expect demonstrations and activities including blacksmithing\, flintknapping\, basket weaving\, weaving\, spinning and felting\, pottery\, open-fire cooking\, butter making\, rope making\, woodworking\, cornshuck dolls\, leatherbritches\, walking stick carving\, and more. SUMMARY:"Bark-to-Basket" Poplar Bark Basketmaking
DESCRIPTION:A summertime exclusive! Join heritage skills crafter Andrew Lee to learn all the steps to make a traditional Appalachian basket from Tulip Poplar bark. This class is broken into a morning and afternoon session\, with six hours of instruction total. For this class\, actual poplar logs will be brought in and students will be instructed in how to remove\, fold and begin to dry a piece of bark. They will take this unfinished basket and other supplies home to complete on their own. Next\, students will be provided a pre-removed\, folded and dried poplar bark preform. They will use the preform to construct another basket (attach handle\, rim supports\, etc.)\, and have the opportunity to add various embellishments. Each student will take home their completed basket\, as well as the materials they prepared to make a second one. This workshop is restricted to ages 18 and up. No prior knowledge of or experience with basketry is necessary. Class fees include the price of admission to walk through the Foxfire Museum before the class begins!

DESCRIPTION:Would you like to learn the skills to carve artistic pieces out of almost any wood you have on hand? Join heritage skill expert Brian Ledford for a day of woodcarving at the Foxfire Museum! Participants will be given their own carving knife and cut-proof glove which they can use to continue practicing at home\, and will be instructed by Brian in the methods and techniques to create their own wooden folk art. For this class\, each “team” of participants must include at least one adult and one child ages 10-17\, though an adult may bring more than one child if desired. Everyone will be learning the skills at the same time\, so be ready to help each other as you learn together! The fee for this class covers the cost of materials and includes admission to tour the Foxfire Museum on the day of your class. \n\n\n\n$80 per adult\, $70 per kid

SUMMARY:Edible Plants and Mushroom Walk
DESCRIPTION:Come join Georgia Master Naturalist and Certified Edible Mushroom guide Michelle Withrow for an engaging walk-and-talk exploring native edible and medicinal plants and mushrooms. Michelle hosts the annual Georgia Wild Foods educational weekend each fall in North Georgia and has led popular walks at Foxfire for the past two years. \n\n\n\nThis nature walk is an easy\, approximately one-mile stroll through the Foxfire property. It is suitable for ages 7 and up\, but not recommended for those with limited mobility\, as the terrain includes occasional uneven ground and gentle inclines. Hiking shoes or tennis shoes are recommended\, along with sunscreen\, bug spray\, and a light rain jacket. \n\n\n\nThe experience also includes a brief classroom session with handouts and the chance to explore touch-friendly samples of dried mushrooms. Walk and classroom time together total about two hours. \n\n\n\nThe class concludes with a delicious snack of acorn pancakes with prickly pear syrup and a wild juice tasting. Participants are encouraged to bring lunch and spend the rest of the day exploring Foxfire’s unique buildings and grounds. \n\n\n\nFoxfire admission is included in the class fee.$50 per person | Limit 12 participants

These unique creations had both practical and legendary uses in day-to-day life. You will learn about the history of Face Jugs as you create your own jug using hand-building methods. Basic techniques of decoration with examples will be available as we turn your work into a one-of-a-kind creation. The finished jugs will be waterproof and ready to display or fill with the substance of your choice! If you are unable to pick up your item from Foxfire after the final firing (where the clay is heated in a kiln to transform it into a durable ceramic material)\, your item can be shipped for an additional fee based on current postage prices. SUMMARY:"Bark-to-Basket" Poplar Bark Basketmaking
DESCRIPTION:A summertime exclusive! Join heritage skills crafter Andrew Lee to learn all the steps to make a traditional Appalachian basket from Tulip Poplar bark. This class is broken into a morning and afternoon session\, with six hours of instruction total. For this class\, actual poplar logs will be brought in and students will be instructed in how to remove\, fold and begin to dry a piece of bark. They will take this unfinished basket and other supplies home to complete on their own. Next\, students will be provided a pre-removed\, folded and dried poplar bark preform. They will use the preform to construct another basket (attach handle\, rim supports\, etc.)\, and have the opportunity to add various embellishments. Each student will take home their completed basket\, as well as the materials they prepared to make a second one. This workshop is restricted to ages 18 and up. No prior knowledge of or experience with basketry is necessary. Class fees include the price of admission to walk through the Foxfire Museum before the class begins!
