DESCRIPTION:Would you like to learn the skills to carve artistic pieces out of almost any wood you have on hand? Join heritage skill expert Brian Ledford for a day of woodcarving at the Foxfire Museum! Participants will be given their own carving knife and cut-proof glove which they can use to continue practicing at home\, and will be instructed by Brian in the methods and techniques to create their own wooden folk art. For this class\, each “team” of participants must include at least one adult and one child ages 10-17\, though an adult may bring more than one child if desired. Everyone will be learning the skills at the same time\, so be ready to help each other as you learn together! The fee for this class covers the cost of materials and includes admission to tour the Foxfire Museum on the day of your class. \n\n\n\n$80 per adult\, $70 per kid

SUMMARY:Edible Plants and Mushroom Walk
DESCRIPTION:Come join Georgia Master Naturalist and Certified Edible Mushroom guide Michelle Withrow for an engaging walk-and-talk exploring native edible and medicinal plants and mushrooms. Michelle hosts the annual Georgia Wild Foods educational weekend each fall in North Georgia and has led popular walks at Foxfire for the past two years. \n\n\n\nThis nature walk is an easy\, approximately one-mile stroll through the Foxfire property. It is suitable for ages 7 and up\, but not recommended for those with limited mobility\, as the terrain includes occasional uneven ground and gentle inclines. Hiking shoes or tennis shoes are recommended\, along with sunscreen\, bug spray\, and a light rain jacket. \n\n\n\nThe experience also includes a brief classroom session with handouts and the chance to explore touch-friendly samples of dried mushrooms. Walk and classroom time together total about two hours. \n\n\n\nThe class concludes with a delicious snack of acorn pancakes with prickly pear syrup and a wild juice tasting. Participants are encouraged to bring lunch and spend the rest of the day exploring Foxfire’s unique buildings and grounds. \n\n\n\nFoxfire admission is included in the class fee.$50 per person | Limit 12 participants

A range of forging techniques will be demonstrated for students to practice and use to work toward their own custom design. Projects include cheese slicer\, wall hook\, steak flipper\, and fire poker. Students should wear comfortable\, natural fiber (cotton)\, clothes they don’t mind getting messy\, and closed toe shoes. Bring lunch and bottled water. All levels are welcome. Materials fee is included. \n\n\n\nMin age is 13. If under 18\, parent/guardian required to be present with the student during class for observing only\, not participating. Class fee includes admission for both the youth and accompanying adult. \n\n\n\n**Class subject to change. Participant agrees to sign a waiver at the start of class.Please arrive on time for important safety information.

DESCRIPTION:This fun class is all about the history and creation of a small traditional style face jug. Face Jugs have a rich history in Appalachia that reaches far beyond our region. SUMMARY:"Bark-to-Basket" Poplar Bark Basketmaking
DESCRIPTION:A summertime exclusive! Join heritage skills crafter Andrew Lee to learn all the steps to make a traditional Appalachian basket from Tulip Poplar bark. This class is broken into a morning and afternoon session\, with six hours of instruction total. For this class\, actual poplar logs will be brought in and students will be instructed in how to remove\, fold and begin to dry a piece of bark. They will take this unfinished basket and other supplies home to complete on their own. Next\, students will be provided a pre-removed\, folded and dried poplar bark preform. They will use the preform to construct another basket (attach handle\, rim supports\, etc.)\, and have the opportunity to add various embellishments. Each student will take home their completed basket\, as well as the materials they prepared to make a second one. This workshop is restricted to ages 18 and up. No prior knowledge of or experience with basketry is necessary. Class fees include the price of admission to walk through the Foxfire Museum before the class begins!

DESCRIPTION:This 6-hour class taught by Foxfire’s resident weaver\, Sharon Grist\, will include instruction on different fibers and their characteristics and practical applications of carding\, drafting\, and spindle and wheel spinning. Students will spin wool and learn several ways to handle fiber to produce varying yarn structures. Students with their own wheel are welcome to bring it. \n\n\n\nClass fee includes instruction\, use of studio equipment\, raw materials\, and handouts. Be sure to pack your own lunch!

SUMMARY:Face Jug Pottery
DESCRIPTION:This fun class is all about the history and creation of a small traditional style face jug. Face Jugs have a rich history in Appalachia that reaches far beyond our region. These unique creations had both practical and legendary uses in day-to-day life. You will learn about the history of Face Jugs as you create your own jug using hand-building methods. Basic techniques of decoration with examples will be available as we turn your work into a one-of-a-kind creation. \n\n\n\nPlease note that this is a two day experience! You should plan to attend both days for the full time provided in order to complete your face jug. This class is offered once a month to help with ease of scheduling. All classes are subject to a minimum number of registrations in order to hold the date. This class is for participants 14 years or older\, and our class size is capped at 5 people to ensure everyone has one-on-one attention from the instructor for a fantastic pottery experience! Please make other arrangements for furry family members for the day\, but bring water and snacks if you like. \n\n\n\nAdmission to the class also includes admission for one to tour the Foxfire Museum on both the Pottery Building and Glazing Days. Each of these methods stand alone\, but can be combined for different creative results. SUMMARY:Kids + 1 Woodcarving
DESCRIPTION:Would you like to learn the skills to carve artistic pieces out of almost any wood you have on hand? Join heritage skill expert Brian Ledford for a day of woodcarving at the Foxfire Museum! Participants will be given their own carving knife and cut-proof glove which they can use to continue practicing at home\, and will be instructed by Brian in the methods and techniques to create their own wooden folk art. For this class\, each “team” of participants must include at least one adult and one child ages 10-17\, though an adult may bring more than one child if desired. Everyone will be learning the skills at the same time\, so be ready to help each other as you learn together! The fee for this class covers the cost of materials and includes admission to tour the Foxfire Museum on the day of your class. \n\n\n\n$80 per adult\, $70 per kid

SUMMARY:"Build-a-Basket" Poplar Bark Basketmaking
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to build a traditional poplar bark basket with heritage skill expert Andrew Lee! In this four-hour class\, a pre-removed\, folded and dried poplar bark preform will be provided. Students will use this preform to construct a basket (attach handle\, rim supports\, etc.)\, and have the opportunity to add various embellishments. Each student will take home their completed basket. The minimum age is 13\, and anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent. No prior knowledge of or experience with basketry is necessary. Class fees include the price of admission to walk through the Foxfire Museum before or after the class time. Come take part in this ancient and useful skill!

SUMMARY:Basic Blacksmithing Weekend
DESCRIPTION:This 2-day workshop will introduce beginning and intermediate students to the basic techniques of blacksmithing using the forge\, anvil\, and hammers. A range of forging techniques will be demonstrated for students to practice and use to work toward their own custom design. Projects include cheese slicer\, wall hook\, steak flipper\, and fire poker. Students should wear comfortable\, natural fiber (cotton)\, clothes they don’t mind getting messy\, and closed toe shoes. DESCRIPTION:During this two-day introduction to weaving\, taught by resident weaver Sharon Grist\, students will learn the mechanics of floor looms\, the process of making a warp\, how to properly thread heddles and reeds\, dressing the loom\, winding a proper bobbin\, hem-stitching the fabric\, and more! Students will weave a twill sampler runner on which they will explore numerous treadling variations on one basic threading sequence. No experience is necessary. \n\n\n\nClass fee includes two days of instruction (9:30 am – 4:00 pm each day)\, use of studio equipment\, all weaving materials\, and instructional hand-outs.
