Boyd's Guide to Northeast Georgia's Rabun County
|
from the introduction:
As a teenager, Rabun County was known to me then only as that place where Deliverance was filmed. Sure, I'd driven through as a child, and spent a few nights with my folks, dining at the Dillard House, but what lay beyond the sight of our automobile's window was of no great interest to me. That all changed in the late 1970s during a hiking trip with a group of college buddies. My first real taste of Rabun's bounty came during several days on the magnificent Bartram and Chattooga River Trails. The sights, sounds, and even smells of these mountains went straight to my head. I was sure that one day I would find a way here and make Rabun County my home - a dream realized in 1991. This outdoor paradise is a land of rugged and time-worn peaks, rolling ridges, and serene valleys. It is a land of mighty (and once-mighty) rivers, sparkling streams, and majestic waterfalls. Rabun County is an enchanting land created for exploration and appreciation by everyone.
If wilderness isn't your thing, consider that Rabun is Georgia's only county to feature THREE state parks - Tallulah Gorge, Black Rock Mountain, and Moccasion Creek. These jewels offer three delightfully different outdoor experiences. Rabun also boasts an incomparable string of mountain lakes along the Tallulah River - Burton, Seed (or Nacoochee), Rabun, Tallulah, and Tugalo are all well-known around the southeast for boating, skiing, swimming, and fishing. Rabun County features miles of stocked trout streams for fishers of all skill levels, and thousands of acres of managed game lands for hunting. Regardless of your outdoor passion, it can likely be enjoyed in Rabun County. So how about it? On your next trip, get out of the car and live a little - you'll be glad you visited our county. I know I was!
